My gift is my song

*sigh*

This past week hasn't been very nice to me and I find myself retreating to a safer place inside. I've tried several things to make me feel better, from retail therapy to comfort food but, the effects didn't last. Then last night, I found something that made me feel nostalgic and comforted all at the same time. It's a song I've known well since childhood and much recently, part of the soundtrack of one of my favorite movies of all time. The original song is by Elton John but the version I found feels more personal since it's sung by a girl.

A different version of this same song, performed of course by the leads, brings Satine's love story to a whole different level in the movie Moulin Rouge. Ah~ Just thinking about it makes me feel all bubbly and sad at the same time. Sad because I feel that it's such a shame we rarely experience a sincere love such as what we watch in films and read about in books.

I mean, if we can write about it, why can't we do it? Maybe because it takes a lot of courage to be true to one's feelings in a world caged by so many societal standards that we'd rather conform than be singled out under cruel labels like 'desperate' or 'obssessed'; Or maybe we've lost sight of the value of this emotion, deciding that it's unpractical, unnecessary even. Whatever the case, we are at a loss.

Satine and Christian

So, if you haven't seen it yet, give Moulin Rouge a chance to make you swing to a warmer and sweeter rhythm. Let it inspire you and of course, delight you as well!
